I had to wait what seemed like hours but really only about 20 minutes for the people to move out of the shot which was perfect timing for the clouds to open for the sun to light up the building and provide a great backdrop not to mention just enough wind to show the flag.
Believe it or not, no battles were fought at the Fort. The Confederate troops occupied the fort in 1861 when Union forces were withdrawn from Florida.
In 1862 Confederate forces left the fort because their manpower was needed elsewhere and Union forces regained control without any shots being fired.

What happened at Fort Clinch?
During the Civil War, Fort Clinch provided a secure refuge for ships smuggling goods through the blockade.
After a brief occupation by Confederate forces, Federal troops regained control of the fort in early 1862, seizing command of the nearby Georgia and Florida coasts for the Union. Although it lay dormant after being utilized in the Spanish-American War of 1898, the fort was revitalized in the 1930s by the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC).
Today, this Florida State Park stands as a testament to Union operations in the region throughout the Civil War. Photographers will find ample opportunities to capture its historical significance and scenic beauty.
